Yale Center for British Art, marked as Louis Kahn's last creation, illuminates once more following a two-year hiatus
The Yale Center for British Art (YCBA) has reopened its doors after a significant $16.5 million renovation, revealing a transformed space that blends modernity with respect for its architectural heritage.
The skylit floor of the YCBA, previously devoted to historical artworks, now hosts an exhibition called In a New Light, showcasing five centuries of British creativity. This exhibition includes a 17th-century oil painting of exotic birds and a contemporary sculpture by Yinka Shonibare, creating a striking juxtaposition that tells a more nuanced, complicated story of the British empire, with a focus on the global narrative within the collection.
The renovation also included replacing the original 224 acrylic skylights with energy-efficient polycarbonate domes, upgrading to LED lighting, and refreshing interior finishes to honor and respect Louis Kahn's original late-Modernist design. These updates improve energy efficiency and lighting quality while maintaining the architectural intent and atmosphere of Kahn's 1970s building.
The YCBA officially opened on 19 April 1977, eight years after Kahn's napkin sketches in La Jolla. Tragically, Kahn died of a heart attack in New York's Pennsylvania Station in March 1974, midway through the building's construction. Despite this setback, Kahn was announced as the designer of the YCBA six months later.
The YCBA was to be a museum for the study and appreciation of British paintings, drawings, and sculpture. It contains the largest collection of British art outside of the United Kingdom.
The reinstallation of the collection involved removing display partitions, opening up fresh sightlines through Kahn's building. This rethought interpretation of the collection aims to create a harmonious relationship between art and architecture.
In addition to In a New Light, the YCBA is re-opening with two separate exhibitions: one on the works of Turner on the occasion of his 250th birthday, and another, an exhibit of paintings by Tracey Emin. There are surprising parallels between Emin and Turner, particularly their connection to the seaside town of Margate, England.
The museum's patron, Paul Mellon, met Kahn over breakfast in La Jolla, California before a tour of the architect's recently-completed Salk Institute. Mellon was impressed by Kahn's demonstration and later lamented his failure to pick up the napkins on which Kahn enthusiastically scribbled his ideas during the meeting.
The YCBA underwent a comprehensive renovation, which also included updating the galleries' lighting to contemporary museum standards. The museum has reopened with a renewed commitment to its dual role as both a research institution and cultural hub, attracting a broader community audience with expanded programs.
Yale students were welcomed back into the YCBA, with sunlight flooding into the entrance court and a reception in an event hall featuring photobooth props such as plush corgis and Union Jacks. The reopening marks a new chapter for the YCBA, offering visitors a fresh perspective on British art and architecture.
