In the picturesque town of Eningen, a former farmer, Emil Reicherter, is making waves by reviving a centuries-old tradition – wine production. Once boasting a vineyard area larger than sixty football fields, Eningen's wine-making history was all but forgotten until Reicherter planted 99 vines in 2002.

Reicherter, with the support of his son-in-law and two grandchildren, has taken a meticulous approach to his craft. To achieve the highest quality, they have given the vines a new pruning, leaving only one shoot per vine with six to eight buds. This method ensures that the grapes receive more nutrients, making the vines lighter and reducing the prevalence of pests due to increased exposure to the weather.

The result of this labour of love is a rare wine called "Achalmgucker," with this year's harvest measuring an impressive 85 Oechsle. On average, 250 to 350 liters of cuvée are produced each year, a testament to the dedication of Reicherter and his family.

The rarity of Reicherter's wine is appreciated, as wine production in Eningen was once common but declined significantly, with the last winemaker giving up in 1936. Few could remember that Eningen had once grown wine until Reicherter began his venture.

The name "Achalmgucker" was suggested by Eningen's former mayor, Margarete Krug (now Heidler), who also enjoyed a few glasses of wine with Reicherter. The wine was once enjoyed by professors in Tübingen, adding to its historical significance.

Reicherter harvested the grapes last week and took them to Neuhausen for pressing yesterday. The wine will be bottled in April and enjoyed by friends and acquaintances. The dream of Reicherter is to revive viticulture and grow his own grapes, continuing Eningen's rich wine-making tradition.
