Living Historical Spectacle: Bad Kötzting's Pfingstritt
Get ready for an unforgettable ride! Every year, in the quaint Bavarian town of Bad Kötzting, the old-as-time equestrian procession known as Pfingstritt takes center stage. This centuries-old tradition brings together a vibrant community in an enchanting blend of faith, fellowship, and regional pride.
Over the course of seven exhilarating kilometers, hundreds of riders don traditional attire and ride steadfast horses, decked out with paper roses—all under the watchful eyes of spectators and even dignitaries like Bayern’s Economics Minister Hubert Aiwanger.
Originally, the participation in this pilgrimage was restricted to the “menfolk”. The fairer sex, however, had a vital role to play, decorating the horses and coordinating festivities alongside it.
Bad Kötzting's Pfingstritt is more than just a horseback parade—it's one of the oldest surviving folk customs in Bavaria, among the largest equestrian processions in Europe. It has been listed in the state register of intangible cultural heritage since 2015.
The tradition is rooted in a legend dating back to 1412. The story goes that a priest braved danger on horseback to bring sacraments to a dying man, with local heroes protecting him en route. Upon their successful return, these heroes pledged to repeat the ride each year.
Faith, culture, and community spirit are at the heart of Bad Kötzting's Pfingstritt. Over the years, the festivities have grown and evolved, incorporating women and younger generations, while retaining the central themes of prayer, unity, and regional identity. Each year, the town watches, learns, and continues the legacy, making the Pfingstritt a powerful symbol of Bavarian heritage.
