Weekend traffic ban on the Rhine River in Wiesbaden: experiment with vehicle-free zones commences
Road Closure Affects Bus Routes in Wiesbaden
Starting from August 1, 2025, a four-weekend traffic trial will take place on Rheingaustraße in front of Biebrich Castle, causing a closure between Am Parkfeld and Wilhelm-Kopp-Straße for motorized traffic, including buses.
During this trial, passengers using bus lines 9, 14, and N3 may experience route changes or delays due to the road closure. The stops at "Schloss Biebrich" will not be served by either line 9 or 14, while the "Regattastraße", "Rheinhütte", "Chem.-Fabrik-Kreussler", and "Carl-Bosch-Straße" stops will be served by line 14 instead of line 9. The stops on "Paul-Ehrlich-Straße", "Nansenstraße", and "Elsa-Brändström-Straße" will be used by all three lines.
ESWE Verkehr has deployed service staff at heavily used stops to inform passengers about the changes and advise them to plan extra time due to the potential disruptions. Passengers are encouraged to follow local signage or announcements for temporary bus stop relocations and alternative travel guidance during the trial period.
The closure will occur each weekend from August 1-3, 2025, and will run from Friday 6 pm to Sunday 10 pm each affected weekend. Access to the affected residential zones will remain possible only for authorized residents and services via Rathausstraße, but no buses are allowed through the closed section.
Disruptions during the trial may extend throughout the city, especially during nighttime. However, the changes do not affect the overall traffic situation in the surrounding areas.
For more information about the changes, passengers can visit the ESWE-Verkehr website or call their service telephone. The traffic trial commenced on August 1, 2025, and will continue for four weekends. Extensive detours for buses may cause delays during the trial. Passengers are advised to stay updated and plan their travel accordingly.

- Other modes of transportation, such as home-and-garden electric scooters or bicycles, may be considered as alternatives for commuters affected by the bus route changes in Wiesbaden, due to the upcoming four-weekend traffic trial on Rheingaustraße.
- The financial implications of the road closure and subsequent bus route changes could impact not only the public-transit industry but also other industries related to transportation and lifestyle in Wiesbaden, if the expected increase in the use of alternative commute methods remains sustained post-trial.
- During the trial period, homeowners with gardens along the affected bus routes may observe a change in the usual noise levels, as the number of buses and commuters temporarily decreases—a fascinating study opportunity for urban planners and environmental researchers in the industry of home-and-garden design and sustainability.
