We use Akismet, a powerful spam filtering service, to minimise spam comments and form submissions. Akismet works by automatically checking every comment and form submission against its global spam database, detecting and filtering out spam content before it gets published.
Each comment receives a status, indicating whether it was caught or cleared by Akismet. This allows our moderators to review and manage spam effectively. Akismet also highlights URLs in comments to reveal potentially misleading links, and has a discard feature that outright blocks the worst spam, improving site performance and saving disk space.
To set this up, we install the Akismet plugin and activate it using an Akismet API key. For forms, Akismet spam protection can be enabled by specifying which fields (e.g., email, message) to scan via field shortcodes added in the form settings. This ensures Akismet filters the content of those specified fields for spam upon submission.
So, when you leave a comment, your data is sent in real-time to Akismet's service where it is analysed using its global spam database and filtering algorithms. Comments are then either approved or flagged as spam accordingly, helping reduce unwanted spam content efficiently.
