Karlsruhe Schlosslichtspiele Light Festival 2025: Celebrating 200 Years of Science and Technology

The city of Karlsruhe is set to host the Karlsruhe Schlosslichtspiele Light Festival 2025, a captivating event that will transform the Baroque palace façade into a large-scale digital artwork. Running from August 14 to September 14, 2025, the festival is a celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) or its predecessors.

The theme for 2025 is "The Shining Lights of Science", a fitting tribute to KIT's groundbreaking achievements and research fields. The shows will illuminate the 170-meter wide and 17-meter high Baroque facade of the Karlsruhe Castle, using projection mapping technology to precisely project images onto the historic building during the shows.

For instance, windows will become waterfalls, and solar fire will ignite behind the main entrance, illustrating various research centers like energy, climate, health technologies, and more. The shows are free for the public to attend and will take place every night after dark.

Beyond the Castle Light Shows, Karlsruhe also hosts additional media art events throughout 2025 under the broader title "Media art is here". These include interactive light installations, electronic live sets, discussions on art's role in urban development, conferences exploring Artificial Intelligence's impact on film production, hands-on creative workshops, and exhibitions in the Alter Schlachthof creative park.

Moreover, film classics will be shown on 35mm in outdoor settings with accompanying programs. These events complement the Schlosslichtspiele by emphasizing Karlsruhe's status as a UNESCO City of Media Arts and fostering engagement with contemporary media art across the city.

Visitors are welcome to bring their own picnic utensils or seating, and food and drinks can be purchased on the premises. Photography and sharing of images are encouraged, for example on Instagram or Facebook. Since the premiere for the 300th anniversary of the city, the shows have attracted around 2.5 million visitors.

Free installations, videos, performances, and interdisciplinary projects will be presented as part of "Media art is here", ensuring a rich and diverse programme for all to enjoy. Whether you're a technology enthusiast, an art lover, or simply looking for an unforgettable experience, the Karlsruhe Schlosslichtspiele Light Festival 2025 promises to be a spectacle not to be missed.
