Since 2020, the award has concentrated on the theme "New Documentary Strategies."
A key aspect of the award is the production of carefully designed photobooks accompanying the exhibitions held at C/O Berlin. Since 2018, these publications have been produced in cooperation with Spector Books and include interviews and theoretical essays to complement the artistic works. As of 2025, 47 photobooks have been published.
