The Guts to Make it Rain or Shine

When a determined soul's on the job, a massive downpour won't hold them back. Evidence in action? The success of the weekend's flea market, held under drier-than-wet conditions, according to Klaus Scheppe, the event's operator.

The vendors resembled a strand of finely lined pearls, demonstrating impressive discipline and camaraderie, said Scheppe. "They know each other, and mutual aid is never lacking amongst the neighboring stalls," he added.

A perfect example of this bond was seen when Carmen Schulze's stall found itself courting the moody river that snaked past the drinking hall after a hefty morning rain. Quick as a flash, a helper appeared, using an umbrella to clear the flower- and leaf-clogged drain, saving the day.

Carmen, who's been a mainstay at the Kaiserallee for years, laughed off the incident. She loved the market's vibrant ambiance and praised its distinct flavour, calling it the best flea market in the region. "The folks here are polite and don't haggle too low. Vendors help each other out and often make purchases from each other," she said.

Despite the dark clouds, Happy Ulmer was a beacon of cheer. Alongside Tobias Schilling, they provided shelter from the elements to many visitors at the refreshment stand. Not a single grim face was spotted, even in the gloomiest weather.

With the storm passing, it was time for a new day, and even the sun dared to peek from behind the clouds. A customer clad only in her undergarments casually tried on a skirt at a stall, while an expert inspector scrutinized a piece of jewelry with a magnifying glass, providing a detailed analysis.

A delightful collection of glasses, ideal for any occasion, ignited a passionate conversation between two random visitors regarding upcoming celebrations. A local author, busy crafting mental notes with a sausage in hand, wandered through the market, soaking up inspiring sights. That's the epitome of a leisurely stroll.
