Dynamic Counteraction to the "Day of the Open Traditional Timber-Framed House" - "The 'Open House Event' has garnered substantial interest"
Upper Lusatia: Thousands Visit Open Umgebinde Houses
Interest in the distinctive Umgebinde houses of Upper Lusatia remains high, with nearly 100 of these timber-framed structures welcoming around 8,000 visitors during the recent "Day of the Open Umgebinde House." Project manager Sven Rüdiger noted the mix of curious onlookers and homeowners seeking renovation advice among those who attended the annual event.
Umgebinde houses, a prominent architectural style from East Saxony and neighboring regions, derive their name from a supporting beam found on their timber-framed exterior. More than 6,000 such houses remain in the districts of Bautzen and Görlitz, primarily built after 1650. Their diversity and testament to skilled craftsmanship mark them as unique treasures.
The first Sunday of May marks the "Upper Lusatian Umgebinde House Road," a 112-kilometer circular tour that takes visitors through Ebersbach-Neugersdorf, Kottmar, Herrnhut, Oderwitz, Mittelherwigsdorf, Großschönau, and Seifhennersdorf. This section forms part of the "German Timber-Frame Road."
The "Day of the Open Umgebinde House" has occurred annually under the guidance of the Umgebinde House Foundation since its inception. The foundation provides expert advice for builders and owners, mediates funding and specialist firms for renovations, and funds its own projects. Its mission encompasses promoting traditional craftsmanship and the use of historical building materials to preserve these architectural wonders.
The unique character of Umgebinde houses, with their blend of German Fachwerk and Slavic influences, makes them an essential part of the region's cultural and historical landscape. Originating in the Middle Ages, they have continued to captivate visitors due to their distinctive structure, cultural significance, and scenic locations in Upper Lusatia.
Visitors during the "Day of the Open Umgebinde House" not only show curiosity about these structures but also seek advice for potential renovations, demonstrating the importance of the employment policy related to the preservation and renovation of these houses.
Enthusiasts, eager to experience the region's lifestyle and home-and-garden charms, find solace in the scenic settings of Umgebinde houses, making them popular destinations for homeowners and historians alike.
