Suburban transportation receives a boost: Sixty new electric buses poised to revolutionize the transit system in Rome.
Rome has taken a significant step forward in modernizing its transport fleet, with the presentation of 60 new electric buses designed to transform public transport in the city's suburban areas.
The initiative forms part of a broader plan to focus on electric and hybrid vehicles, as the city moves towards a more sustainable future. The new buses, supplied by the Italian company Solaris, are Mercedes-Benz eCitaro models, equipped with three doors, low-floor accessibility, and specialized stations for disabled passengers.
The plan includes electric buses for both eastern and western Rome, marking the first time electric buses will serve Rome's suburban areas. This move is highlighted by Di Salvo, President of the IX Municipality, as crucial for enhancing connectivity for all residents due to the municipality's limited access to rail transport.
The new electric bus service was unveiled in a ceremony attended by Roberto Gualtieri, Eugenio Patané, Tweety Di Salvo, and John Zannola. The city has a commitment to sustainable mobility, with plans to introduce more electric and hybrid buses, significantly reducing the average age of Rome's bus fleet to just over five years, down from 12 years in 2018.
The new-generation batteries powering the buses provide a range of around 300 kilometers. Intelligent suspension systems ensure stability during cornering and braking by reducing roll and pitch movements in the new electric buses.
Atac, the city's primary public transport company, is planning to put 110 hybrid buses into service by 2025, alongside 110 electric buses. Autoservizi Troiani aims for full operation by 22 October 2024. By the start of next year, 60 electric buses will be circulating on peripheral routes.
The project is a step towards transforming Rome's suburbs from "a city of the car" to a "city of proximity," as Di Salvo celebrates. The company plans to introduce an additional 10 electric buses by October and 40 by January 2025. The new buses offer enhanced comfort and road safety features, further improving the public transport experience in Rome.
With the introduction of these new electric buses, Rome continues its journey towards a more sustainable and connected future.
