Spending a Memorable Weekend with Gaurav Kripalani, the Artistic Director of SRT
Gaurav Kripalani, artistic director of the Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT), has shared his ideal weekend, marked by a mix of theatre, family, food, news, and sports. As the SRT presents Macbeth as part of the Shakespeare In The Park series running at Fort Canning Park till June 1, Kripalani finds respite in a weekend filled with favorite activities.
Kripalani, who has been with SRT for over two decades and produced more than 100 plays, looks forward to attending a good play, possibly one of SRT's productions. His perfect weekend also includes relishing a plate of chicken rice, a popular Singaporean dish, and spending time with friends and family.
Every May, on his birthday weekend (which falls on May 8), Kripalani's friends and family organise a picnic at the park, turning the occasion into something of a production. Each year, they choose a theme and go all out with decorations and props, making it equal parts over-the-top and incredibly thoughtful.
Under the stars with those dear to him, Kripalani cherishes lying on a picnic mat, enjoying a drink, and savoring a sumptuous meal. For him, food, laughter, and being surrounded by loved ones is what makes a weekend perfect, with sleeping in late the next morning serving as the cherry on top.
Kripalani's Sunday mornings usually commence with coffee, a ritual he cherishes. He is a news junkie, spending a couple of hours each Sunday reading a mix of local and international newspapers. In the evening, he often heads out to catch a play and a meal with friends, followed by watching an Arsenal match or a Formula One race, sometimes both, if he is lucky.
Kripalani feels incredibly blessed to have a loving family and a few special friends who always make his birthday weekends memorable. They are the heart of it all, and the reason these weekends hold such significance for him.
