In Baden-Württemberg, Matteo and Luca/Luka follow closely for boys, and Emma and Lina edge up for girls, nationally dominating the charts with Marie and Maria, and Matteo and Paul in the lead.

Andrea Ewels, GfdS director, weighs in on the enduring popularity of these names from her Wiesbaden base, attributing it to their beautiful and harmonious sounds. "Names ending in vowels are often parents' first pick, as they find them easy to pronounce, internationally comprehensible, and timeless." The short length and modern yet timeless appeal further fuel their widespread appeal.

GfdS has been dispensing an annual list of popular baby names since 1977, with the data sourced from approximately 750 regional registration offices. These entries, amounting to nearly 900,000, gives the society a near-comprehensive view (92%) of the favored baby names across Germany.

While the Southwest's stats dominate our narrative, the popularity landscape unfolds differently in other regions like Saxony, where Mia and Emil steal the show. Emma and Oskar vie for the second spot, with Frida and Mateo snapping up the third.
