Sock set of 2103 donated for charitable cause
In the heart of Germany, the city of Pforzheim and the Enz district are inviting citizens to participate in a unique and heartwarming event - the "Sock Challenge" for World Down Syndrome Day. Organised by the self-help group UpSideDown and the inclusion commissioners, this initiative aims to raise awareness and promote inclusion for individuals with Down Syndrome.
The "Sock Challenge" involves collecting various types of socks, with a goal of 2103 socks, a number representing the genetic peculiarity of people with Trisomy 21, who have an extra 21st chromosome. The collection drive has received great support from the public, particularly from affected people and their families, who have shared their daily challenges, highlighting the importance of creating attention for the situation of people with Down Syndrome.
Participants can contribute by sending or dropping off their sock donations at the Youth and Social Office in Pforzheim by March 15, 2024. A specially created coloring page for sock donations can be downloaded from the website of the self-help group UpSideDown at
Digital sock photos or greetings can be submitted by email to [email protected]. For participating institutions such as kindergartens, schools, youth centers, or facilities for people with disabilities, a pick-up service is offered. Institutions can call 07231 39-2009 by March 14 to arrange a pick-up time.
The socks will be symbolically hung on a line on Pforzheim Market Square on March 21, 2024, as part of a sock flash mob. Last year, the heads of the administration in Pforzheim and the Enz district, as well as the presidents of the Sparkasse Pforzheim Calw, participated in the action.
If the challenge is successful, there will be a surprise. People around the world wear different colored socks on this day as a symbol. So, join the "Sock Challenge" and help make a difference in the lives of people with Down Syndrome. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, it would be best to contact local organizations involved with Down Syndrome awareness in Pforzheim or check their official social media channels.
