Sea shanties are traditional work songs once sung by sailors on large sailing ships in the 19th and early 20th centuries. They were used to ease heavy work onboard and coordinate movements during group tasks, and have a strong rhythmic component that helped synchronize crew efforts and lighten the monotony of long voyages. Originally, a shanty is a unison group song.
In the modern context, sea shanties have experienced a cultural revival, with events and gatherings celebrating maritime heritage. At the 3rd Shanty Day in Anrath, you can expect hearty grilled food and salads, coffee and cake, and plenty of opportunities to sing along, stomp your feet, and have fun.
The event starts at 11 am and will feature performances by the three shanty groups. Shanties are typically sung without instrumental accompaniment, allowing the power of the collective voice to shine. This year's Shanty Day is set to be a memorable occasion, preserving the seafaring musical tradition and fostering community appreciation of nautical history.
