Savoring Meals in R rustic Wilderness
In a collaboration aimed at promoting safety in the great outdoors, Back Country Cuisine and the Mountain Safety Council have teamed up for the second run of outdoor safety stickers on the meal packaging.
Based in Invercargill, New Zealand, Back Country Cuisine is a producer of freeze-dried meals for outdoor use in Australasia. With a team of 21 dedicated individuals, the company offers a variety of meal options, including vegan, vegetarian, and halal choices.
The unique method of freeze-drying used by Back Country Cuisine ensures consistency in meal ingredients. This process, which removes frozen ice crystals from food in a vacuum chamber, a process called sublimation, gives food a long shelf life, low weight, and maintains its nutritional benefits, making it appealing for outdoor adventurers. The low temperatures used in freeze-drying help retain the natural vitamins in the food.
Tony Caudwell, the representative of Back Country Cuisine, expresses enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, "The taste of familiar, home-cooked meals is comforting when out in the wild." He also advises that the amount of water specified on the packet is a minimum measurement recommendation. If the meal's consistency is too thick, he recommends adding extra water.
But it's not just about the food. The outdoor safety stickers on the Back Country Cuisine meals provide information on what to pack, river safety, clothing, and more. QR codes are included on the stickers for finding more information.
Tony Caudwell believes that this collaboration is beneficial for both parties, as it allows Back Country Cuisine to help the Mountain Safety Council spread safety messages. He expresses his excitement about the collaboration, stating, "I'm thrilled to be a part of this initiative and help promote safety while providing high-quality meals for outdoor enthusiasts."
The collaboration between Mountain Safety Council and Back Country Cuisine is not a new one. The two organisations have been working together since 2020, with the aim of promoting safety in the outdoors. This partnership is a testament to their shared commitment to the safety and well-being of outdoor adventurers.
Back Country Cuisine began in 1998 when it took over the business from the local founding company, Alliance Freezing Company, which had experimented with freeze-drying in the 60s for military rations. It later expanded into the outdoor adventure sector. The most popular Back Country Cuisine meals are the roast lamb with vegetables dinner and the apple pie dessert.
Tony Caudwell also suggests using the meal packet as a rubbish bag after rinsing it out, encouraging outdoor adventurers to leave no trace. With this collaboration, Back Country Cuisine is not just providing meals for outdoor enthusiasts, but also promoting safety and environmental responsibility.
