Sailing event, Hanseatic Sail, introduces new attraction: "Moby Dick" encourages visitors to savor the pace

The Hanse Sail 2025 in Rostock is set to host a unique addition – the Moby Dick market. From August 7 to 10, this special area will focus on sustainability and upcycling initiatives, offering visitors a chance to learn about waste reduction and eco-friendly living[1].

At the heart of the Moby Dick market are upcycling ideas, showcasing creative ways to reuse materials and reduce waste[3]. Visitors can expect to see seating furniture made from old pallets, plant pots fashioned from used car tires, and wind chimes crafted from a patchwork rug[7].

The market also offers regional fruits and vegetables from local, solidarity-based farming methods[3]. Alongside these, educational games and talks will promote sustainability concepts to a wide audience[3]. Demonstrations of environmentally friendly solutions, such as dry toilets, will be on display[3].

A program offering used, cleaned stuffed animals as prizes will extend their lifecycle and reduce waste[3]. The market will also emphasise waste separation, avoidance, and leftover food reuse after the event[3].

The Moby Dick market serves as an interactive, educational hub at Hanse Sail 2025, reflecting the event's commitment to ecological responsibility alongside maritime celebrations[3][4].

The market's events include Global Engagement, Kontrastkollektiv, Les Enfants Sauvages, Leon Zeug, Flundermann, Diaffara Drame & Martin Druckrey, and designer Bettina Sieg's colorful statement cards[5].

The Rostock Craftbar will provide high-quality drinks and offer a special cooperation for culinary highlights[6]. Despite strong competition during the Hanse Sail, this is the first time that Charlotte Berger's market is located at the event[8].

Berger, the organizer of the Moby Dick market, explains that implementing these ideas was challenging due to budget constraints and time limitations[2]. However, she sees being in the public space and working with the city as a new challenge[9].

Berlin-based Kadmos Verlag enriches the market with a book about Baltic Sea animals and humorous "fun facts" about the Baltic Sea[10]. The Moby Dick market, located at Kröpeliner Tor, is open to the public for the first time[1].
