Romancing through melodies: Love ballads at Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf
The Düsseldorf Schauspiel students recently took the stage at the Schauspielhaus for a captivating love revue titled "In my head is a roller coaster", a song by Helene Fischer. The show, which took place on January 1, 2023, and again on February 6, 2023, at 7 PM (January 1st) and 8 PM (February 6th) respectively, was a rollercoaster ride of emotions, blending intensity, humour, melancholy, and glamour.
Under the musical direction of Matt Johan Leenders, who controlled the show from the piano, eight students brought the revue to life. These talented individuals included Orlando Lenzen, Michael Fünfschilling, Sarah Steinbach, Elias Nagel, Charlie Schülke, Luise Zieger, Roman Wieland, and Jule Schuck.
Orlando Lenzen showcased his passion and comedic talent as the queer "Gutter Princess" from a song by Tim Fischer. Meanwhile, Michael Fünfschilling lightened the mood with a humorous rendition of Georg Kreisler's "Love Letter" for his wife. Roman Wieland interpreted something heartwarming from the Hamburg band Kante, while Luise Zieger sang an erotic fantasy by Georgette Dee "On the train to Paris".
Sarah Steinbach masterfully delivered the poetic edge of Herbert Grönemeyer's work, and Jule Schuck and Charlie Schülke demanded great emotions, singing "Let's both be romantic, please!" A hint of melancholy was present, with a song by Tristan Brusch: "When love leaves us, we hold on to the rest".
The students wore sparkling, carefully selected dresses, adding to the glamorous atmosphere of the revue. Comfort was brought by an encore with a song by Gerhard Gundermann: "Again and again, the grass grows, wild and high and green."
Classics by Cole Porter ("I get a kick") and Jacques Brel ("Ne me quitte pas") were performed in German, adding a unique twist to these beloved songs. Elias Nagel expressed his love for heavy Franconian dishes, sausages, dumplings, and beer, bringing a touch of local flavour to the revue.
Tickets for the revue "In my head is a roller coaster" can still be obtained at www.dhaus.de. The director of the revue, however, remains unspecified. Nonetheless, the Düsseldorf Schauspiel students delivered a memorable performance that left audiences yearning for more.
