Rhine Ruhr's potential Olympic bid is being jointly discussed by D.LIVE and D.SPORTS.

Düsseldorf, a city renowned for its expertise in major sporting events, is leading the Rhine-Ruhr region's bid for the Summer Olympics. The city, along with Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich, is one of several German candidacies under consideration for hosting the Games in 2036, 2040, or 2044.

The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) published a bidding guide at the end of December 2024 to bring the Olympic and Paralympic Games to Germany. The various regional bids, including Rhine-Ruhr, are currently being developed, with feasibility plans to be completed by September 2025.

The Rhine-Ruhr region, with its abundance of sports facilities, is well-equipped to host such a large-scale event. If successful, the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Düsseldorf would be the city's largest sporting event.

Düsseldorf's readiness to ensure a professional and sustainable implementation of the Games is evident, with Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller expressing enthusiasm for the bidding process. The city council will discuss the Games at its meeting at the end of May.

Burkhard Hintzsche, a key figure in Düsseldorf's sports scene, stresses the city's readiness to deliver a successful Games. The experiences gained from other major international events in recent years will aid Düsseldorf in the implementation of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Düsseldorf's involvement in the Rhine-Ruhr bid extends beyond the city limits. The State Chancellery of North Rhine-Westphalia has asked Düsseldorf to coordinate the bidding process due to its expertise in major sporting events.

D.LIVE and D.SPORTS, two prominent entities in Düsseldorf's sports scene, are involved in the planning and execution of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Düsseldorf. The city's capacity for supporting multi-sport international events, as demonstrated by its successful hosting of part of the 2025 Summer World University Games (named Rhine-Ruhr 2025), suggests that Düsseldorf plays a significant part in infrastructure and organizational readiness relevant to the Olympic bid.

All interested regions must complete the bidding process by May 31, 2025. Following that, a public referendum is scheduled by June 2026, with the final vote on Germany’s candidate set for autumn 2026. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will make its host city decision no earlier than 2027.

In conclusion, the Rhine-Ruhr region is one of several German candidates for the Summer Olympics. Düsseldorf, as a key city in the Rhine-Ruhr bid, is ready to contribute significantly to the infrastructure and organization of the Games. The city's past successes in hosting major international events bode well for its potential role in the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
