Review of Women's Salomon X Ultra 5 Gore-Tex Hiking Shoes

The Salomon X Ultra 5 Gore-Tex is the latest iteration in the popular X Ultra series, designed to offer improved durability, stability, and performance on challenging trails.

A standout feature is the shoe's Matryx upper technology reinforced with Kevlar fibres. This ultra-durable design provides enhanced abrasion resistance without adding excessive weight, making the shoe more rugged and long-lasting.

The advanced midsole and chassis system also make significant improvements. The shoe incorporates an updated EnergyCell foam midsole that provides better shock absorption, and an advancedCHASSIS™ system that delivers improved lateral stability and support on uneven terrain. This results in improved balance and comfort, especially during steep ascents and descents.

The Contagrip outsole, a staple in Salomon's grip technology, continues to perform well. The outsole offers reliable traction on wet, dry, and rocky surfaces, with chevron-shaped lugs that provide good grip on various surfaces.

For waterproofing and breathability, the shoe uses a GORE-TEX membrane. This feature keeps feet dry and comfortable in wet conditions while maintaining breathability.

The X Ultra 5 retains a slightly wider forefoot than the X Ultra 4, although some users find it tight and may require several days to break them in. Padding around the tongue and collar is ample, reducing pressure points. The shoe's Quicklace system offers quick and easy fit adjustment, although some hikers find it tricky to dial in a perfect snug fit compared to traditional laces.

The men's version of the X Ultra 5 Gore-Tex is slightly heavier and offered in sizes from 7 to 14, while the women's model is only offered in standard U.S. sizes from 5 to 11. There's also a mid-height version available in both men's and women's styles, which retails for $185 and features standard laces rather than Salomon's single-pull Quicklace design.

The shoe is competitively lightweight, weighing 1 pound 6.6 ounces for the pair, and offers a solid, planted feel with good lateral support. However, it's recommended to try the shoe on before purchasing, as the fit may not work for all narrow-to-average-footed hikers.

After eight days of use in Alaska, the X Ultra 5 Gore-Tex has shown impressive build quality and longevity, with no scuffs, scrapes, or damage. The shoe's proven Gore-Tex lining provides water resistance, but coverage is limited due to the low collar. The shoe may be warm in mid-summer temperatures due to its Gore-Tex lining.

Notably, Salomon has made changes to the X Ultra 5, transitioning to PFAS-free Gore-Tex and using recycled materials like PET bottles and material waste. The shoe is also available in a non-waterproof version for both men and women, which are a hair lighter weight and cheaper thanks to their mesh upper and lack of waterproof membrane.

In summary, the Salomon X Ultra 5 Gore-Tex offers improved durability, stability, and protection with its Matryx Kevlar upper, EnergyCell midsole, advancedCHASSIS system, and durable Contagrip outsole. These enhancements make it more capable on rough, technical terrain compared to the X Ultra 4, while maintaining a lightweight, trail-runner-like feel suitable for fast hiking and lighter backpacking.
