Retail giant Macy's revives the 'Black Friday in July' promotional event

Macy's has announced the launch of its "Black Friday in July" sale, a week-long shopping extravaganza running from Wednesday to Sunday. This event comes amidst a surge of summer sales in the retail industry, as consumers bring forward their spending due to fears of tariffs pushing up prices.

The sale offers deals across various categories, including clothing for men, women, and kids, accessories, jewelry, beauty products, and home items. Macy's is also focusing on back-to-school styles for kids and the family, aiming to drive sales and volume.

Interestingly, while other major retailers did not have widely reported large-scale Black Friday in July events on the exact same dates in 2021, related summer sale events occurred around that time. For instance, Wayfair held a five-day mega sale event later in July 2021, offering up to 80% off on home products.

Macy's appears to have been one of the few major retailers promoting a focused Black Friday in July sales event in July 2021, while others either held sales events at different times or did not utilize the Black Friday in July marketing approach that year. Wayfair’s comparable event happened later in July but in a different year. Amazon’s Prime Day is a separate, earlier summer event held in June.

The move by Macy's comes after a decline in Q1 net sales and comps. However, the retailer's credit card revenue was up 31% to $154 million in Q1. The sale is a strategic move to boost sales and attract customers, both in-store, online, and through the Macy's app.

Other retailers, such as Target and Walmart, held sales earlier this month with discounts on back-to-school items. Consumers are eager to take advantage of these sales events, with many bringing forward their spending to avoid potential price increases.

In addition to the Black Friday in July sale, Macy's is also celebrating "Christmas in July" starting from Friday, offering holiday-inspired deals, exclusive offers, and curated selections. This dual focus on summer and holiday sales is a testament to Macy's commitment to catering to its customers' needs and providing them with a wide range of shopping options.
