In the heart of Solingen, Germany, the Bird and Animal Park is home to a vibrant collection of exotic species, including three enclosures dedicated to Macaw pairs. Each pair has its unique story, as we delve into the lives of Dora, Michael, Heinrich, and Naomi.

Heinz and Heidrun, a pair that has been part of the facility for over two decades, are among the park's longest-standing residents. Their history is somewhat murky, with suspicions that they may have come from wild catches and had several previous owners. Despite the uncertainty, they live happily together in the park.

Another Macaw pair, Dora and Michael, came together about half a year ago. Dora, a lively and curious Yellow-breasted Macaw, is just two years old. Michael, with his distinctive red plumage supplemented by numerous yellow parts, was previously paired with a macaw named Rosa. However, conflicts with other animals led to Rosa's separation from Michael.

Michael and Heinrich were hand-raised by limited animal caretaker Janett Heinrich. The pair shares an enclosure with Naomi, a macaw known affectionately as "the bird lady" due to a charming encounter with caretaker André Hartig. When Hartig greeted Naomi with the words, "Well, Grandma?", the name stuck. Naomi's distinctive deep dark red plumage contrasts with Heinrich's vibrant colouring, and they live happily together in the park.

Interestingly, Naomi came from a difficult living situation years ago. However, she has since found a loving home at the Solingen Bird and Animal Park. An anecdote about Naomi involves her interaction with the caretakers, where she collaborates with one of them in a playful way to sort stamps into different shapes.

Macaws are known for their extreme bite force, capable of cracking walnuts effortlessly. Heinrich, despite having a slightly crooked beak, does not let this hinder his eating. The park's caretakers plan to introduce Dora and Michael to Heinrich and Naomi next spring.

Dora, in particular, has gained experience interacting with humans from another animal park. This experience may prove beneficial as the pairs get to know each other in the coming months.

For more detailed information about these Macaw pairs, such as their history, behaviour, or special care at the park, visitors are encouraged to reach out to the Solingen Bird and Animal Park directly through their official website, visitor centre, or social media channels.
