Property Plans for the Rotmans: A Look Ahead

In an exciting turn of events, Holy Cross College has recently purchased the Rotmans Furniture property located at 725 Southbridge Street, marking the beginning of a significant transformation for the historic Worcester property [1]. The redevelopment plans, though still in their early stages, promise to breathe new life into the 300,000 square foot building.

Two students, Nathan Howard '25 and Ben Lepper '25, have been instrumental in envisioning the potential of this newfound expansion. Nathan, a double major in Art History and Political Science, is actively involved with The Spire and Moot Court, while Ben, an English major with a French Minor, serves as the Controller of Free Speech, the Tour Guide Coordinator, and an Ultimate Frisbee player.

Ben Lepper has presented several intriguing ideas for the redevelopment, including moving Brooks to the new location and constructing a new music centre for the music majors. One of his most notable proposals is the installation of a giant bouncy house, a fun and engaging addition that could become a popular attraction among students.

Another idea that has garnered attention is Ben's suggestion to collaborate with Acoustic Java to create a massive coffee shop and bakery on campus. This could provide a convenient and welcoming space for students, staff, and visitors alike.

There has been speculation about the possibility of creating off-campus dorms, a food spot, and other facilities at the Rotmans property. One interesting proposal is the transformation of the old Rotmans building into the official Holy Cross museum, a move that could honour the college's rich history and heritage.

However, the fate of the old Rotmans building is yet to be decided, with no definitive plans announced as of now. The college and Madison Properties are currently in the process of evaluating various options and possibilities for the redevelopment of the property.

In a touching tribute to a beloved campus tradition, Ben Lepper has also proposed the creation of a memorial to the Kimball to-go boxes. This idea, if realised, would pay homage to the iconic food containers that have been a staple of the Holy Cross dining experience for many years.

As the redevelopment plans for the Rotmans property unfold, students like Nathan Howard and Ben Lepper are eagerly contributing their ideas and visions to shape the future of Holy Cross College. Their enthusiasm and creativity underscore the potential for this exciting new chapter in the college's history.
