Professor Rudolf Horn Wins Saxony-Anhalt Art Prize for Lifetime Design Achievements
The Art Prize of Saxony-Anhalt, awarded biennially to artists connected to the state, has recognised Professor Rudolf Horn for his lifetime achievement in graphic design. Horn's work, spanning over four decades, has significantly influenced form design in both East and reunified Germany.
Horn's MDW furniture program, co-developed with Eberhard Wüstner in 1966/67, was a standout design achievement that graced many households in East Germany. The jury for the 2025 Art Prize praised Horn's ability to balance design ambition with practical implementation under DDR cultural policy.
A retrospective exhibition, 'Rudolf Horn. Living as an open system', was held at the Kunstgewerbemuseum Dresden in 2019 to celebrate his 90th birthday. Throughout his career, Horn combined modernist principles with timeless art, leaving a lasting impact on the region's artistic landscape. He taught at the Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle from 1968 to 1996, nurturing the next generation of designers.
Professor Rudolf Horn's receipt of the Art Prize of Saxony-Anhalt acknowledges his enduring influence on graphic design in the region. His work, which harmonises modernist principles with timelessness, continues to inspire and shape the design world.
