Wiesbaden Math Playgrounds Receive Regular Maintenance and Cleaning
The City of Wiesbaden's Department of Green Spaces and Sports (Amt für Grünflächen und Sport) has been responsible for maintaining and replacing playground equipment since 2020. This commitment to ensuring a clean and well-maintained environment for children to play in extends beyond World Children's Day, with regular inspections and maintenance carried out throughout the year.
Boubakar Azzaoui, who leads the playground cleaning team at ELW, stated that employees find various items such as cigarette butts, glass shards, bottle caps, syringes, used condoms, and dog poop on Wiesbaden's math playgrounds. To raise awareness about litter found on playgrounds, ELW, in collaboration with the 'Clean Hessen' campaign, has put up posters on 11 popular math playgrounds in Wiesbaden.
Each math playground receives a main inspection once a year, checking all foundations and components in addition to a functional test. Defective components are dismantled and repaired in the workshop of the Green Office during the main inspection. Small repairs are made immediately during the operational inspection, such as replacing swing seats, tightening screws, or sanding down split wooden beams.
In addition to the inspections, ELW cleans Wiesbaden's 157 math playgrounds at regular intervals. Some math playgrounds are cleaned up to five times a week. Two employees use tongs to pick up litter from the sandbox and around the swings and climbing frames, which takes approximately 25 minutes. Once a week, employees of the Green Office check the condition of the math playgrounds, shovel sand back into the play areas, rake leaves, and collect shards.
In 2024, 635,000 euros were spent on replacement purchases for Wiesbaden's math playgrounds. In 2025, 995,000 euros are planned for replacement purchases, with some already implemented through office 365. However, the press release does not provide information about the costs of repairs in 2025.
The current inspection found that all play equipment is functional. The math playground on Brunhildestraße is scheduled for cleaning on Thursday, for the second time this week. Among the math playgrounds receiving new equipment are the play ship Eleonorenanlage, Alfred-Delp-Straße, Warmer Damm children's playground, play tower on Hauptstraße, and carousel at Kochbrunnenplatz.
For any questions regarding the math playgrounds, the Press Office of the State Capital Wiesbaden can be contacted. The Press Office of the State Capital Wiesbaden published this press release, with contact information available on their website.
The safety of the play equipment is more important than cleanliness for ELW. The posters, titled 'Our nasty playmates,' list items that are found regularly on Wiesbaden's math playgrounds, serving as a reminder of the importance of maintaining a clean and safe environment for children to play in.
