The Science Museum's Cosmonauts: Birth of the Space Age exhibition is a captivating showcase about the Soviet and Russian space programme, featuring original spacecraft, engines, and personal items from early human spaceflight. The exhibition, supported by BP, ART RUSSE, and the Blavatnik Family Foundation, is currently ongoing and will be open until 13 March 2016.

The exhibition brings together exceptional original artefacts from the Soviet programme, such as R-7 launch vehicle engines, Vostok spacecraft, and personal items and on-board objects from cosmonauts. It frames these objects to tell both the technological story and the human story, providing a comprehensive view of the political, scientific, and human achievements behind the first satellites, first crewed flights, and early space missions.

Visitors to the exhibition come from diverse backgrounds, including art students, retired aeronautics engineers, and children in astronaut costumes. Each visitor seems to have a special personal reason for being there. Many have personal stories that add a unique depth to the history, such as a man who shared his story about standing with a receiver in 1957, trying to listen to radio communications from Sputnik 1.

Volunteers for the Cosmonauts exhibition play a crucial role in enhancing the visitor experience. They work on the gallery floor, helping visitors engage with the exhibition, answering questions about the objects and the story on display, and facilitating interactive elements or interpretation panels. Shifts commonly involve speaking with a wide range of visitors, explaining historical and technical context, and helping people navigate the exhibition content and activities.

Volunteers report gaining subject-knowledge about space history and exhibition interpretation, improving public-speaking and customer-service skills, and enjoying direct contact with visitors and rare objects. The volunteer coordinators at the Science Museum have made the volunteer experience easy and welcoming.

Applications for Cosmonauts volunteers are open until 30 November 2015. If you're interested in space history and enjoy working with people, this could be the perfect opportunity for you.

In the blue room of the Cosmonauts Exhibition, deep discussions about the future of space programs are taking place. The exhibition is more than just a display of historical artefacts; it's a platform for sharing stories, learning, and inspiring the next generation of space explorers.

The exhibits at the Science Museum's Cosmonauts: Birth of the Space Age exhibition extend beyond the realm of space technology, also offering a captivating look at the home-and-garden lifestyle of early cosmonauts through personal items and on-board objects. As visitors engage with these objects and the stories behind them, they find themselves motivated to consider the future of space exploration as a lifestyle, fostering a new generation of space pioneers and potentially shaping their own home-and-garden decisions.
