Participating in the 2022 Urban Cycling Campaign: Essential details for cycling enthusiasts

Halle (Saale) is gearing up to participate in the annual "Stadtradeln" competition, a nationwide environmental and cycling campaign promoting sustainable urban mobility and climate protection. This year's event in Halle (Saale) will take place from September 1 to September 21, 2025.

Organised by the Climate Alliance network, the competition encourages residents, companies, and institutions to leave their cars at home and collect as many bicycle kilometers as possible over a 21-day period. The aim is to promote cycling as a key part of sustainable urban mobility and to reduce car usage.

Residents of Halle (Saale) can participate by registering to join the campaign during the official period (Sept 1–21, 2025). Once registered, participants will be automatically assigned to their city. They can then log their bicycle kilometers traveled during these 21 days, either on the nationwide website http://www.stadtradeln.de, via an app, or using a recording sheet.

To amplify the community impact, participants are encouraged to join teams from their neighbourhood, workplace, or other groups to compete collectively. The competition is also an excellent opportunity to encourage friends, family, and colleagues to take part.

The city council's decision to participate in the "Stadtradeln" action was facilitated by the donation initiative of the "MitBürger" association. The competition is supported by the State of Saxony-Anhalt and a network of bicycle-friendly municipalities, underscoring its environmental and social importance.

The city and its mayor actively promote participation as a contribution to tackling the climate crisis and achieving a balanced mix of transportation modes. In fact, Mayor Egbert Geier will open the Halle "Stadtradeln" on September 5, 2022, at 4 PM on the market square.

Additional related events, such as the Cargobike Roadshow on September 12 in Halle, occur around the same timeframe, offering participants opportunities to engage further with cycling culture and innovations.

Ralf Bucher, the city's cycling officer, will explain the "Stadtradeln" project at the information event about the competition on August 31, 2022, at 5 PM in the Small Hall of the City Hall, Marktplatz 2. For more information about the competition, including the rules, participants can visit https://www.stadtradeln.de/rules.

  1. To complement the city's cycling efforts and foster sustainable living, residents might consider incorporating cycling into their home-and-garden routines, such as commuting to the local nursery or garden store by bike instead of using a car.
  2. In line with the city's focus on promoting sustainable urban mobility, individuals could also explore incorporating cycling into their lifestyle choices, like cycling to work, school, or even leisure activities, which would help reduce carbon emissions as part of a more sustainable transport system.
