Overcoming Chlorosis Easily with Just 2 Essential Elements

Chlorosis, a condition that causes plants to lose their vibrant color with green veins remaining, can be effectively treated with a simple solution. This solution involves dissolving citric acid and iron sulfate in water.

Preparing the Solution

To prepare the solution, dissolve about 1 tablespoon (approximately 14 grams) of ferrous sulfate (iron sulfate) in 1 quart (approximately 1 liter) of warm water. Add a small amount of citric acid to acidify the solution. This will act as a chelating agent, helping to keep iron in a form that plants can absorb, especially in soils that tend to be alkaline.

Application

Apply the solution by watering the soil near the plant roots every 1-2 weeks. This method is effective for plants like hydrangeas that show yellowing leaves with green veins, a typical symptom of iron chlorosis.

For larger plants or crops, foliar sprays or chelated iron forms such as ferric citrate might be considered as alternatives due to better solubility and efficiency. However, the citric acid and iron sulfate mix is a practical home/garden approach.

Treatment Requirements

For best results, treat plants exhibiting signs of chlorosis with 5 liters of the prepared solution per plant. Typically, 2-3 applications of the solution per plant are required. For optimal results, it is recommended to water cucumbers with this solution after 5 pm in August, which could yield up to 11 kg from one plant.

Spraying plants in addition to the solution application can also improve results for treating chlorosis. It is important to note that this treatment should be used only for plants showing signs of chlorosis.
