With summer just around the corner, the Mountain Safety Council (MSC) is encouraging New Zealanders to get out and explore the country's tracks, but with a word of caution. The MSC's Chief Executive, Charles "Bud" Daisley, is promoting the council's new app, Plan My Walk, as a valuable tool for planning a safe walk this summer, whether it's a day walk, overnight, or multi-day tramp.
The app is backed by the McCaws, who have returned to support this world-first initiative aimed at improving outdoor safety. According to Daisley, the app is designed to help plan and prepare for a safe outdoor adventure, making it easier for everyone to enjoy the great outdoors responsibly.
Last summer, the MSC thanked New Zealanders for being safety smart, as no land-based outdoor recreation fatalities were recorded during December and January, a first in 14 years. However, on average, there have been 3.7 deaths over the December and January period involving land-based outdoor recreation activities since 2007.
Daisley emphasises the importance of personal safety and encourages new trampers to start small, ask for advice, and ease into outdoor activities. Nationally, there are on average 7500 injuries from December to February, so it's crucial to take the necessary precautions.
The MSC provides various resources for supporting outdoor-related stories, including outdoor communications, river safety, basic outdoor skills, outdoor activities, and a video series. For more information, you can contact the Operations Manager at 021 885 275 or the Communications Advisor, Rebekah Wilson, at 021 190 2930.
One such resource is the return of the award-winning tramping safety videos, just in time for the busy summer season. These videos offer valuable advice and tips for a safe and enjoyable outdoor experience.
Hooker Hut is a popular summer destination for those looking to get away. Whether you're embarking on a 'hut bagging' challenge or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, the MSC encourages you to consider your personal safety and take simple steps to ensure a great, safe experience this summer and make it home.
So, let's talk Communications. If you have any questions or need further information, feel free to reach out to the MSC at 027 443 75573. Remember, sometimes it's not that easy to turn back, so let's make sure we're prepared for every adventure this summer.
