A New Horror Haven: The Twisted Spine Opens in Williamsburg

The Twisted Spine, a unique indie bookstore specializing in horror and dark literature, is set to open its doors in Williamsburg, Brooklyn on September 6, 2025. The store, located at 306 Grand Street, will mark the city's first bookstore dedicated entirely to the genre.

Co-founder and owner, Lauren Komer, has carefully curated a selection of around 5,000 books, spanning various sub-genres such as slasher, true crime, and fungal horror. The collection will date from the 18th century to the present, featuring books from numerous countries and in some cases, in their original languages.

The Twisted Spine's interior design is described as a cozy, gothic, dark academic environment, offering a perfect setting for horror enthusiasts. The store will also feature a gothic café during the day, and in the evenings, it will transform into an espresso bar and a beer and wine bar.

For those new to horror or young readers, The Twisted Spine will have sections tailored to their needs. The store will also work to spotlight local authors and independent book publishers, providing a platform for emerging talent in the horror genre.

The Twisted Spine's 1,200 square-foot space neighbors Night Owl Video, Twenty Sided, and The Four Horsemen, making it a perfect addition to the vibrant Williamsburg community. The store will open its brick-and-mortar outpost on September 6th, with opening weekend hours from 12 pm to 8 pm. Regular weekly hours will follow after the grand opening.

In addition to the indoor space, The Twisted Spine will boast a backyard graveyard for customers to enjoy on nice days and cool nights. This outdoor area will provide a unique setting for customers to immerse themselves in their horror literature while soaking in the ambiance.

As The Twisted Spine prepares to open, it joins a growing list of cultural institutions in the city. For instance, The Frick Collection recently debuted its first-ever café following the museum's April reopening. The Twisted Spine promises to offer a unique and engaging experience for horror fans and book lovers alike.
