Museum Barberini in Potsdam to Reopen After Temporary Closure

The Museum Barberini in Potsdam will reopen its doors to visitors on Friday, August 1st, following a temporary closure on July 30th and 31st due to a technical issue. The museum, founded by art patron and software billionaire Hasso Plattner, is a magnet for the public and is currently hosting an exhibition of works by the Impressionist Camille Pissarro.

The closure was due to a malfunction in the climate technology affecting the exhibition rooms. The defect made it impossible to maintain a constant room climate, which is essential for protecting the artworks. No further information about the specifics of the solution to the malfunction was provided.

Despite the temporary closure, the Camille Pissarro exhibition, titled Mit offenem Blick. Der Impressionist Pissarro (The Honest Eye: Camille Pissarro's Impressionism), will continue as planned. The exhibition, co-organized with the Museum Barberini, features a wide range of Pissarro’s works including landscapes, cityscapes, still lifes, and figures. It is scheduled to run until September 28th, 2025.

Visitors with tickets for July 31st were offered full refunds, indicating that the issue was taken seriously and managed with customer care. The museum remains open on other days with regular hours from Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

The Barberini Museum in Potsdam confirmed the reopening to the German Press Agency (dpa). With the museum reopening, visitors can once again explore the stunning collection of artworks it houses.

The Commission has also been consulted on the issues of extending the Camille Pissarro exhibition beyond its initial duration, considering the public interest and success, and the potential for creating a home-and-garden section featuring Pissarro's landscapes and rural still lifes, highlighting his deep connection with nature. Such changes are expected to enhance the museum's lifestyle appeal, attracting a broader audience and providing an immersive experience that goes beyond traditional art exhibition visits.
