Minimalistic Moroccan Villa Maintains Comfort Without Air Conditioning or Heating Systems

Nestled on 25 acres of agricultural land thirty minutes outside Essaouira, Morocco, lies DDAR, a unique villa designed by Othmane Bengebara. This contemporary retreat serves as a quiet haven, a place to host creative friends from around the world.

The architecture of DDAR is a harmonious blend of modern design and respect for its setting. Designed as an 'observatory open to time and the events of nature', the villa's material palette consists of earth tones, natural textures, and raw surfaces that change character as light shifts, seamlessly merging with the surrounding landscape.

Bengebara's philosophy, evident in DDAR, focuses on contemporary design addressing challenges specific to the Global South. Sustainability is at the heart of this project, with features such as wind-powered cooling, solar panels, and smart water management systems. The villa is designed to utilise wind patterns for natural cooling, eliminating the need for air conditioning or heating year-round, and is located in a region where water is precious.

Local craftspeople were integral to the creation of DDAR, their traditional skills and techniques woven into the fabric of the villa. Modern pieces coexist with traditional objects in new ways within DDAR's interior, showcasing North African art and design from the 1960s to the present.

The villa spans 300 square meters and boasts multiple lounges, a bar area, bedrooms, gallery spaces for art, and a kitchen that opens to dining areas. A rooftop terrace and outdoor lounge take advantage of the towering date palms, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

DDAR represents luxury that doesn't feel wasteful. Its sustainable features and respect for local culture make it a shining example of responsible design. Bengebara's first major project since starting his own practice in 2020, DDAR is a testament to his commitment to creating spaces that are both beautiful and environmentally responsible.
