Memorial buildings in Lüner will be accessible on September 14th
On the 14th of September, 2025, Lünen will join the nationwide celebration of history and heritage as several of its landmarks open their doors for the "Day of Open Monuments". This event, coordinated by the German Foundation for Monument Protection (Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz, DSD), aims to raise awareness of the value of historical buildings.
One of the participating landmarks is Villa Urbahn, a protected monument since 2017, located on Graf-Adolf-Straße. Designed by Anton Huber, this architectural gem now houses the Museum of the City of Lünen. Visitors can explore the villa's current exhibitions, take guided tours of the old building, and even participate in a children's painting workshop. The distinctive Zöllinger roof of Villa Urbahn adds an extra touch of charm. The villa will be open from the 13th to the 14th of September, from 10 am to 6 pm.
Another interesting landmark is the Alte Schule Alstedde, located on Alter Kirchweg. Built in 1865, this ensemble includes a school building, teacher's residence, stable, and school garden. The school garden, a rare example of the so-called "one-room school", has been reconstructed and is maintained by the Arbeitskreis für Umwelt und Heimat e.V. Guided tours will be offered, and coffee, cake, and musical performances in the style of the 1860s will add a touch of nostalgia. Please note that the Alte Schule Alstedde is not barrier-free.
The former canteen of the Gewerkschaft Eisenhuette Westfalia on Huettenallee is yet another participating landmark. Built around 1870, it is part of Lünen's oldest industrial plant, the 1826-founded Eisenhuette Westfalia. Refreshments will be available on site, offering a taste of the past.
The Geschwister-Scholl-Gesamtschule, built between 1956 and 1962, is considered an example of humane post-war architecture. This building, located on Holtgrevenstraße, is another participating landmark in Lünen.

The "Day of Open Monuments" is a unique opportunity to delve into Lünen's rich history and appreciate its architectural heritage. Don't miss out on this chance to step back in time and experience the city's past!
