A sea of enthusiasts, numbering 15,000, descend upon the quaint village of Geldern-Pont for a four-day filled fantasy and camaraderie. The event has been a sell-out for months, its popularity skyrocketing each year.

Amid the vibrant crowd, Alina Mentz, with her striking fiery red hair, stands out like a beacon at the jewelry stand. Her exceptional attire, mirroring an Elven princess from the books, catches the eye among the myriad captivating costumes. As a trained tailor from Moers, she has crafted her entire look, from the gown to the wig, showcasing her dedication to the fandom.

When asked why she invested such effort, Alina chuckles.

Fiery Costumes in Searing Heat

For countless aficionados, the universe of J.R.R. Tolkien embodies the intricate world and the story surrounding Frodo and his fellowship. "It's the magic, the adventure, the escape from the mundane," says Valerian Arens. Discovering the cinematic trilogy at the tender age of 12 with her father, it's been an undeniable passion ever since.

The devotion and ardor shown by individuals like Alicia, Valerian, and their companions can be overwhelming. As they make their way towards the Shire in the heart of the eight-hectare festival grounds, they pass armored knights and a fully equipped dwarf with a monumental hairstyle. Undeterred by the well over 30-degree heat and scorching sun, they continue to bring the spirit of Middle-earth to life.

The Roar of Battle Approaches

The atmosphere shifts as the sound of war cries and neighing horses grows closer. The Battle of Rohan commences! Some 20 actors reenact the iconic battle from the second part of the saga. Behind the scenes, more than 400 people work tirelessly to make the Tolkien Days a success: the German Tolkien Society crew, volunteers, fire brigade, over 80 traders and artisans. Each dedicates their time and effort out of pure love for Tolkien's works, instead of monetary gain.

Annika Röttinger, a member of the organizing team for 11 years, shares the same sentiment. "It's all about the love for Tolkien and sharing it with others," she says. "The four-day festival primarily finances itself through ticket sales, which have been sold out for months. This year, there are 15,000 visitors, compared to last year's 11,000 and one hectare less event area."

As the wind carries the haunting melody of the medieval band from the main stage in Gondor, it's easy to see: It's a great day to be in Middle-earth.
