Junsei: London's Unique Japanese Dining and Vinyl Listening Bar

Junsei, a Japanese restaurant in Marylebone, London, has transformed into a hub for the city's emerging listening bar movement. The establishment now offers a unique combination of Japanese dining and a vinyl listening bar experience.

At its core, dining at Junsei revolves around Japanese-style grilled skewers, offering over 20 chicken skewers cooked over Binchōtan charcoal. Accompanying these are seasonal vegetable and speciality skewers. Sharing plates include wagyu beef rib cap, crab korokke with caviar, flame-seared salmon warayaki, and diver scallops with shoyu butter.

As the night progresses, Junsei transforms into a Hi-Fi listening bar on Thursday and Friday nights. Guests can enjoy curated vinyl spanning Japanese City Pop to soulful grooves while dining on grilled skewers and sake. The late-night menu expands the dining options, offering izakaya-style comfort food designed for extended drinking and listening sessions.

The late-night menu includes favourites like chicken nanban with tartare mayo and soboro don with minced chicken, egg yolk, and shichimi. For dessert, there's seasonal granita with fruit and citrus, milk purin with kokuto sugar, and grilled fruit with brown sugar ice cream.

Junsei's late-night menu does not appear to have any direct connections to the Listening Suite at Lake Como's Il Sereno hotel, as mentioned in some articles. However, the restaurant collaborates with guest DJs and selectors to expand its late-night programming.

Traditional izakayas are popular spots where workers decompress after long days. Junsei aims to recreate the after-dark culture of Tokyo's izakayas, which are neighbourhood gathering places serving food, alcohol, and providing intimate settings for conversation.

The drinks programme at Junsei features Japanese spirits, led by sake, shochu, and Japanese wines, with a concise cocktail list incorporating Japanese flavours. The centrepiece is the communal-style claypot donabe rice.

Junsei is one of the few establishments in London that offers this unique combination of Japanese dining and a vinyl listening bar experience. It's a must-visit for those seeking an authentic Japanese night out with a twist.
