Koblenz residents may soon have the opportunity to shop on Sundays.
The Rhineland-Palatinate Shop Opening Act is set for a revision, with the aim of providing more legal certainty for four Sunday trading days per year. The changes, which have been approved by the Ministerial Council in Mainz, focus on two main areas: the opening of small automated sales outlets on Sundays and providing more legal certainty for Sunday trading.
Labor Minister Dörte Schall (SPD) and Economic Minister Daniela Schmitt (FDP) have jointly justified the amendment in a statement. The changes will primarily affect small automated sales outlets, such as "Tante Enso" or "Tante-M-Shops," which may now open on Sundays, subject to certain conditions.
The revised act does not specify the exact dates for the four Sunday trading days. However, it sets limits on the opening hours for these outlets, with a maximum of 12 hours, between 6:00 and 22:00. Furthermore, the affected small automated sales outlets may not exceed 150 square meters of space.
The changes are designed to support and secure a local supply of daily necessities, particularly in rural communities or certain neighborhoods. The amendment also applies to hybrid micro-sales outlets where staff is present only at certain times during the week.
It is important to note that the four Sundays designated as commercial trading days in Rhineland-Palatinate have not been explicitly stated in the revised act. Moreover, the statement by the ministers did not include details about the suitable occasions for the four Sunday trading days.
The revisions to the Rhineland-Palatinate Shop Opening Act continue to focus on supporting and securing a local supply of daily necessities. The changes do not affect staffed micro-sales outlets. The amendment aims to offer more legal certainty for Sunday trading, while the restrictions on Sunday opening apply only to small automated sales outlets.
While the specific Sundays for commercial trading and the suitable occasions for trading remain undetermined, the revised act represents a significant step towards modernizing Rhineland-Palatinate's retail landscape and ensuring a more consistent supply of essential items on Sundays.
