Streaming and TV: The Favorite Leisure Pastime of Germans
Individuals in Germany spend more than two hours daily absorbed in television viewing.
Dive into the entertainment routines of Germans and discover they spend around two hours each day engrossed in TV and streaming content.
According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), leisure is a significant part of the German lifestyle, accounting for roughly six hours daily. One-third of this leisure time—approximately two hours and seven minutes—is dedicated to the tantalizing world of television and streaming platforms.
The Time Use Survey, conducted every ten years with the last one happening in 2022 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, encompassed participants aged ten and above. The survey provides a fascinating glimpse into how Germans spend their free time.
A whopping one and a quarter hours were spent daily on social interactions, such as conversations, phone calls, and social media updates, as well as visits from friends, attending social events, and coffee dates. Engaging in cultural activities, such as reading books, listening to music, or hitting the movies or going on trips, claimed an average of 53 minutes a day.
Sports and spending time on smartphones and computers (excluding communication) each garnered about half an hour. Sadly, the Time Use Survey does not account for unpaid activities like gardening, DIY projects, sewing, baking, or caring for pets, while sleeping is also not considered leisure time.
On weekends and holidays, the average leisure time soars to seven hours and 45 minutes, compared to the weekday average of five hours and 26 minutes. The Destatis highlights that these figures represent averages, taking into account various factors like age, gender, employment status, and more.
