Indigenous Media Event Holds at UNPFII from April 21st to 25th

Gear up for the 24th session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) from April 21-May 5, 2025, at the UN Headquarters in New York! This annual gathering is a congregation like no other, attracting more than 2,000 Indigenous representatives, Member States, UN agencies, and stakeholders.

Wanna know what's new this time? The Secretariat of the Permanent Forum (SPFII), the Department of Global Communications (DGC), and Cultural Survival team up to present the Indigenous Media Zone (IMZ) from April 21 to April 25, 2025. This hub offers an exclusive platform for Indigenous media, journalists, and platforms to report on the session, focusing on Indigenous worldviews, perspectives, and languages. And guess what? Non-Indigenous media enthusiasts are welcome too!

This year's theme is "Implementing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples within United Nations Member States and the United Nations system, including identifying good practices and addressing challenges."

As we stride into the International Decade of Indigenous Languages, the IMZ is all set to encourage Indigenous media practitioners from various regions to join the global conversation using their native languages.

Find the IMZ in the UN Correspondents Association Room (3rd floor, Secretariat building, S-310) from Monday to Friday, April 21-25, 2025, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm EST. On Monday, April 21, the IMZ will be open from 2pm to 6pm.

Rosy Sul González (Maya Kaqchikel), Cultural Survival Indigenous Rights Radio Program Manager, and Shaldon Ferris (Khoisan), Cultural Survival Indigenous Rights Radio Coordinator, will host the IMZ. They emphasize that Indigenous community media strongly amplify the voices of communities, making visible their hopes, demands, victories, and challenges. The Media Zone at the United Nations Permanent Forum magnetizes Indigenous community media and communities to put their power to good use.

Whether you're an Indigenous journalist looking for a live webcast, a delegate seeking to mix and mingle with media over discussions, or a business leader aiming to share insights on the topic, the IMZ has got you covered! Expect live webcast interviews, panel debates, and discussions with Indigenous experts, human rights defenders, delegates, and business leaders. You'll also find a media workspace for real-time coverage, interaction, and blogging about the events. And let's not forget the social media buzz happening on facebook.com/our website and facebook.com/joinundesa.
