In the heart of Hamburg, Germany, a unique audiovisual experience awaits visitors at Planten un Blomen. Known as the Water Light Organ (Wasserkunstorgel), this iconic spectacle has been delighting crowds since 1973.
Every summer evening from early May to late September, the Water Light Organ comes to life, synchronising water fountains with classical music to create a choreographed display of illuminated water jets, timed perfectly to the sound. The system, hidden behind the scenes, uses pumps, valves, and a computer control unit to regulate water pressure, lighting, and music in real time.
The main beam of the Water Light Organ shoots up to 36 meters into the sky, while 99 nozzles and 762 spotlights at the light console create a dazzling array of colours. Two dedicated operators, one at the "color organ" and one at the water levers, coordinate the show, which lasts approximately 30 minutes.
The Water Light Organ is a rarity, as it is played live, unlike many similar fountain systems that rely on pre-recorded programs. Arriving a few minutes early at the park lake is recommended to secure a good viewing spot for the water light concerts, which take place in the middle of Planten un Blomen, free and open-air.
The first large fountains were already present in Planten un Blomen in 1938, and they were expanded for the IGA in 1953 and 1963. The Water Light Organ underwent a major overhaul in 2019, ensuring it continues to enchant audiences for years to come.
During a roughly hour-long show, as much water is moved as a city with 500,000 inhabitants consumes in an hour. The choreography for the Water Light Organ is created every evening live to music, based on specially written scores for water and light.
The Water Light Organ's live performance involves automatic or semi-automatic control of water jets and lighting synchronized to musical programming, delivering an immersive audiovisual experience.
