Top 20 States to Move to in 2025: A Fresh Look

Quitting your old life and setting up a new abode in a new state requires careful consideration. To make the decision a bit easier, moveBuddha recently revealed their 2025 moving trends report, highlighting the states where individuals are actively searching to relocate.

In the report, affordability and proximity to nature emerged as significant factors for potential movers. By analyzing 55,000 searches made from January 1 to March 10, moveBuddha identified the popular destinations that are attracting people this year.

Topping the list is South Carolina, which, according to moveBuddha's report, has an in-to-out ratio of 2.18, meaning more people are searching to move in compared to those looking to move out. This Palmetto State boasts a 26% higher inbound interest as opposed to the second most popular state Tennessee.

Joining South Carolina in the moving hotspots are other southern states like Alabama and Mississippi. MoveBuddha reports a consistent trend towards locations with a lower cost of living, mild climate, and outdoor activities.

Mid-sized cities offer a growing appeal, according to the report. For instance, Myrtle Beach takes the lead among the most sought-after cities to move to in 2025, surpassing larger cities such as Charleston. Huntsville, Alabama, and Greenville, South Carolina, rank second and third, respectively, in the preferred list of cities for relocation this year.

On the contrary, expensive urban areas like New Jersey and California see more outbound moves due to their high cost of living. Indeed, New York City takes the crown for the most popular exit city this year, with over twice as many search queries for moves out compared to moves in. Long Beach, California; Memphis, Tennessee; San Diego, California; and San Jose, California round out the top five cities with the highest number of move-outs.
