Honoring the Oxheart Tomato: Its Unique and Delicious Characteristics

The Bull's Heart Tomato Festival in the Douro region of Portugal is a celebration of the unique and culturally significant Bull's Heart tomato, a variety that has long been cultivated in the region.

History

The Bull's Heart tomato, or Tomate Coração de Boi in Portuguese, is a traditional heirloom variety that gained popularity due to its large size, sweet taste, and suitability for the Mediterranean climate. The festival emerged as a community event to honour this particular tomato variety, celebrating the harvest season and bringing together local farmers, producers, chefs, and residents to showcase the tomato’s versatility and its importance to regional agriculture.

Significance

The festival highlights the agricultural importance of the Bull's Heart tomato, representing a link to traditional, small-scale farming in the Douro region. It embodies agricultural biodiversity and emphasizes the value of cultivating indigenous produce suited to the local environment.

In terms of culinary heritage, the festival showcases various culinary uses of the Bull's Heart tomato, from fresh consumption to traditional dishes. It attracts chefs who innovate with this tomato while respecting regional food traditions.

As a cultural event, the festival fosters community spirit, encourages tourism, and provides an economic boost by attracting visitors interested in culinary tourism. It serves as a platform for promoting sustainable agriculture and preserving the Douro’s regional identity.

Competition and Collaboration

The competition to choose the best Douro tomato is informal and itinerant, taking place on August 29th at Quinta da Pacheca in Lamego. The Douro's main wine producers are involved enthusiastically in this project, with the participation of Douro wine producers adding an extra layer of excitement to the event.

Before the best bull's heart tomato is chosen, there will be a discussion with Edouard Cointreau and Miguel Poiares Maduro. The event is an initiative of Celeste Pereira, Edgardo Pacheco, and Abílio Tavares da Silva, and the jury for the competition comprises chefs, winemakers, journalists, and other gastronomic experts.

Book and Collaboration

The publication of the book "Tomate Coração de Boi do Douro - A outra riqueza do vale mágico" by the Douro development associations (Beira Douro, Douro Histórico, and Douro Superior) last year won the Gourmand World Cookbook award in the fruit book category. The book highlights the cultural and gastronomic significance of the Bull's Heart tomato and the Douro region.

Restaurant Participation

Twenty-four restaurants across the Douro region have joined the "Tomate a Mesa (a)gusto todo" initiative this year, with each restaurant featuring tomato-inspired dishes on their menus. The festival's annual celebration of indigenous and traditional products of the Douro wine region takes place in August.

In summary, the Bull's Heart Tomato Festival is more than a celebration of a single vegetable; it is a vibrant expression of local culture, gastronomy, and sustainable agricultural practices that connect the region’s past with its future.
