Homemade Dishwasher Cleaning Tablets Recipe

Saving money and protecting the environment has never been easier with homemade dishwasher tablets. This DIY project is simple, doesn’t require hard-to-find ingredients, and is eco-friendly.

To get started, gather the following ingredients: baking soda, washing soda, citric acid, dish soap, white vinegar, and optional citrus essential oil.

Follow these steps to create your own dishwasher tablets:

  1. Combine the dry ingredients: Mix 1 cup washing soda, 1 cup baking soda, and ½ cup citric acid in a large bowl. Optionally, add ½ cup salt for improved cleaning and water softening.
  2. Add dish soap sparingly: Add just a few drops of dishwashing liquid to the dry mixture and stir thoroughly to avoid too much sudsing during the wash cycle.
  3. Form tablets: If desired, lightly moisten the mixture with water or white vinegar (mixed with water) to help it clump together. Press the mixture firmly into silicone molds or ice cube trays to shape the tablets.
  4. Dry tablets: Allow the tablets to dry completely for 24-48 hours until hard. Store them in an airtight container in a dry place.
  5. Use: Put one tablet in your dishwasher’s detergent compartment per load. For tough stains or extra shine, you can add a small splash of white vinegar in the dishwasher’s rinse aid compartment (do not mix vinegar with the dish soap in the tablets as it will cause foaming).

This method produces an effective, natural dishwasher detergent that softens water, cuts grease, and prevents film with the citric acid. Essential oils like lemon or other citrus oils can also be added for scent and additional cleaning power.

When ready to use, place a tab in the dispenser drawer and run a cycle as usual. Remember to keep the dishwasher tablets away from pets and small children. If the dishwasher tablets are too big for the dispenser, crumble them up first.

Enjoy the benefits of homemade dishwasher tablets while reducing your carbon footprint and saving money on store-bought detergent. Happy cleaning!

Note: Avoid adding too much white vinegar when spraying the top of the dishwasher pods, as it can cause the mixture to harden into dry chunks. The size of the dishwasher detergent drawer should be considered when choosing a silicone mold or ice cube tray.
