Crafts of yore are grabbing the spotlight once more! On Whit Monday, the Rhineland and Westphalia regions are putting the spotlight on some old-school goodies: Mill Day, a celebration where mills from these regions are open for public inspection. This year marks the 32nd German Mill Day, a shoutout to a craft that once ruled the land and harnessed the power of water and wind.

Launched by the German Society for Mills and Mill Preservation, this event aims to increase awareness about the cultural heritage of mills. As announced by the Rhine Regional Council (LVR) in Cologne, many people have fond memories of mills dotting their hometown landscapes. "Take a walk down memory lane," says Julia König, responsible for coordinating Mill Day at the LVR, "Mill Day offers a chance to relive those memories."

What can you expect on Mill Day? Demonstrations, hikes, and bike tours are up for grabs within the region of the Westphalia-Lippe Regional Council, featuring attractions like the LWL Open-Air Museums in Hagen and Detmold. Mill enthusiasts are expected to roll into North Rhine-Westphalia in droves, with activities varying depending on location.

In the past, mills were everywhere in North Rhine-Westphalia—processing grain, oil, bones, sawing wood, producing paper, or recycling rags. Even the Mill Region of Rhineland, nestled between the Erft, Wupper, and Sieg rivers, will showcase mills, hammerworks, and water power plants. One of the attractions is the Grottenhertener Windmill in Bedburg (Rhein-Erft district), hopefully churning out some milled goodness if Mother Nature provides enough wind power.

Pro tip: If you're keen on learning more about mill-related events in Rhineland and Westphalia, consider exploring local historical societies or cultural organizations within those regions.
