Historic Lisbon landmark, Pasteis de Belém, expands with a new pastry shop location

In the heart of Lisbon, on Rua de Belém, number 68, a new chapter in the storied history of Pastéis de Belém began on June 28, 2025. The iconic bakery, famous for its custard pastries, opened its second location, blending historical and modern elements to create a unique and captivating space.

The design of the new location, masterminded by design studio Viterbro Interior Design, offers a fresh, elegant interior that respects the heritage and legacy of the original 19th-century bakery. This harmonious fusion is achieved through the prominence of traditional azulejos (Portuguese tiles), which reference the historic look, combined with natural wood and abundant mirrors to add a contemporary touch and open feel to the space.

Gracinha Viterbo, the creative director behind the design, emphasized the intention to maintain the "architectural and emotional essence" of the brand. The goal was to honour the tradition while adapting to current needs, creating a space that feels connected to the past yet fit for the present and future.

The new location not only increases capacity to handle more visitors but also sets the stage for an upcoming multi-phase renovation of the original 1837 shop, starting in 2026. This renovation aims to preserve the historic character while upgrading its function and aesthetics in a similarly sensitive manner.

Visitors can now enjoy the same fresh-from-the-oven Pastéis de Belém at the new location, just next door to the original shop. Pasteis de Belém assures that the taste of the pastries remains the same at both locations.

This second location marks the first step in a collaboration between Gracinha Viterbo and Pastéis de Belém. Until 28 June 2025, there was only one location to buy and try the Pasteis de Belém. From now until the end of 2025, visitors can buy custard pastries at both Pasteis de Belém locations.

The second location of Pastéis de Belém is at the former exit for the bakery's interior courtyard. The design aims to respect tradition and legacy while introducing functional upgrades and a contemporary aesthetic. Azulejos, natural wood, and mirrors are prominent features in the new design, offering a fresh look compared to the original shop.

As the renovation progresses, Pastéis de Belém continues to uphold its commitment to preserving its rich history while adapting to modern demands. The blend of historical cues, like the azulejos and classic colour schemes, with modern materials and spatial concepts creates continuity between past and present for one of Portugal’s most iconic bakery brands.

The design of the new Pastéis de Belém location, incorporating traditional azulejos, natural wood, and abundant mirrors, creates a harmonious fusion of historical and modern elements, reflecting the brand's aim to honor tradition while catering to current needs, thus shaping a unique, captivating eco-lifestyle space. With the new location offering food-and-drink delights alongside home-and-garden essentials in a fresh, elegant interior, it serves as a testament to the blend of tradition and innovation in today's eco-friendly, contemporary living.
