Tragically, the Henry family's joy was short-lived; Margaret passed away suddenly in Egypt at the age of 45 in 1874. The Castle became a familial mausoleum in her memory.
Fast forward to the 20th century, and the castle underwent another metamorphosis as a group of Benedictine nuns from Ypres, Belgium, purchased the estate in 1920. Displaced from their own abbey, which was destroyed during World War I, the nuns brought their rich monastic tradition to Kylemore Abbey, transforming it into a place of prayer, hospitality, and education. The establishment flourished into a renowned school for young girls, which remained operational until 2010.
Today, a small religious community maintains the abbey's monastic tradition and invites visitors to explore its spiritual depths. The restored rooms of the castle, the Henry family mausoleum, and the neo-Gothic church built in Margaret's memory vividly portray the poignant family saga.
