Grateful Ukrainian Refugees Renovate Playground in Cluj as a Token of Appreciation for Romanian Hospitality

In the suburbs of Florești, Romania, a playground has been given a new lease of life, thanks to the efforts of Ukrainian refugees living in the area. The project, entirely funded and carried out by members of the Ukrainian community from Cluj and Florești, was a sign of gratitude for the support offered by Romanians after the start of the war in Ukraine.

The Association of Ukrainian Youth in Romania (ATUR) was not involved in this renovation project, but Anna Shevchenko, the vice president of ATUR, led a separate initiative to restore the "Friendship Park" in the same region.

The renovation of the playground was a significant undertaking. The playground was in poor condition, with old, rusty, and dangerous equipment that had previously deterred local families. However, the Ukrainian community persevered, relying on the joint effort of refugees, young parents, students, and local volunteers.

They faced several challenges during the process. Initially, they tried to involve the City Hall but were told they could not intervene as the playground was on private property. To overcome this, they collected signatures from local residents to get permission to restore the playground. Despite the obstacles, passersby and community members offered help, such as providing electricity and equipment, fostering good collaboration.

This community-led initiative transformed the area into what is now called the “Friendship Park,” demonstrating a tangible expression of gratitude beyond simple words amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The renovated playground stands as a testament to the resilience and gratitude of the Ukrainian community and their Romanian hosts.
