Reborn in the Digital Age

Welcome to our weekly series diving into the vibrant, ever-evolving tech world - Beyond the Alphabet. From the heart of Mountain View and beyond, we explore the latest trends and innovations shaping our digital landscape.

After the dust settled following Google I/O 2025, we've been experimenting with a plethora of groundbreaking new features. Our journey began with Android 16 QPR1, a significant update introducing the dynamic design changes of Material 3 Expressive.

One recurring highlight throughout the keynote was the various ways Gemini could assist you, extending beyond your smartphones and tablets. This versatile AI was showcased in tasks like browsing with Project Mariner or even web development.

With Android's 20th anniversary fast approaching, as our EIC, Shruti Shekar, reminded us, it seemed the perfect opportunity to test Gemini's mettle. So, what better way to explore its capabilities than creating an informative website about Android's history?

Setting the Groundwork

Although I could go all-in and ask Gemini to create a website from scratch, I decided to establish a comparison among several models at my disposal. Here's a rundown of the contenders:

  • Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview
  • Gemini 2.5 Flash Preview via Google AI Studio
  • ChatGPT o4-mini-high
  • Claude Sonnet 4

For this project, I chose to work directly from Chrome browser tabs on my desktop PC instead of using LM Studio to run these models locally.

With the housework out of the way, I started with the simplest prompt: Create a website about the history of Android.

Gemini 2.5 Pro

Wasting no time, Gemini 2.5 Pro quickly initiated its Canvas feature and began writing code for the website. Informing me of a single-page site layout, it rendered the page for me to preview.

A glimpse into the past

After the site finished rendering, Gemini explained its creation process, including the frameworks utilized.

Gemini 2.5 Flash Preview

By providing the same prompt as before, I switched to Gemini 2.5 Flash Preview in the AI Studio. After a brief pause, I found myself in a coding studio-like environment. The middle pane showed the layout of various files, while the pane on the right displayed the code being generated by Gemini.

Unfortunately, I encountered an error message in the preview window after taking a coffee break, but thanks to the "Auto-fix" button, my faith in Gemini was quickly restored as it re-wrote the code and fixed the issue.

ChatGPT o4-mini-high

Being amused by the open AI or Google-powered "thought process" display, I gave ChatGPT approximately 40 seconds to gather its thoughts before formulating a response. Like the Gemini models, it created a single HTML page featuring a timeline layout.

From humble beginnings

While coding the content, a separate panel appeared to the left of the conversation, featuring a snapshot of the current progress. Unlike the Gemini models, ChatGPT didn't automatically show the preview until the "Preview" button in the upper right corner was clicked.

Claude 4 Sonnet

Claude 4 Sonnet offered a unique take, featuring a single landing page that started with a timeline before seamlessly segueing into sections like "Android by the Numbers" and "Major Android Versions."

Concluding Thoughts

Considering the simplicity of the prompts provided, the results were predictably straightforward - each model generated a single static page. But hey, some ares more complex than others, and it's fascinating to see what each AI can accomplish when given even a basic instruction.

As expected, I assumed that Gemini 2.5 Pro-generated website would be the most basic of the bunch. Yet surprisingly, that turned out to be untrue. In fact, a single HTML page with organized sections, complete with detailed descriptions, was what I'd choose for a simple yet comprehensive overview of Android's history.

While none of the models blew me away with their designs, they were an interesting introduction to what these AI's can accomplish. Of course, it's essential to remember that without a host and domain, these websites can't be accessed. But they offer a tantalizing glimpse of what's possible.

Stay tuned for more insightful dives into the world of technology with Beyond the Alphabet. Our journey doesn't end here - there's always more to discover in the digital age. And, as always, keep your eyes peeled - we might have something exciting coming soon!

In the realm of creativity and home-and-garden, Gemini AI's versatility was demonstrated in the creation of a possible art installation. Utilizing the innovative AI, one could design a digital art piece depicting the evolution of technology, showcasing Android's journey from its inception to the present day.

Furthermore, picture a smart home that intelligently adapts to the lifestyle of its inhabitants by seamlessly integrating Gemini AI's capabilities. This artificial intelligence could manage energy consumption, perform home automation tasks, and even engage in conversations with family members - all while providing an enhanced life experience within the comfort of one's home.
