Enjoying a reprieve from the heat: Humans, agriculture, and livestock thriving in July's milder climate
In a surprising turn of events, Fresno, California, has experienced unusually cool weather in late July 2025. The temperatures, currently in the 80s, have been a welcome change from the usual triple-digit figures, providing relief from extreme heat.
This cooler trend has had a positive impact on both crops and livestock in the region. Ryan Jacobsen, a farmer and member of the Fresno County Farm Bureau, has noted that these cooler conditions are beneficial for cherry production and other crops. The lower temperatures help prevent heat stress, which can cause bud damage and shutdown of plant processes above about 102°F. As a result, crops are slightly ahead of schedule, with most developing faster under these cooler conditions.
Livestock also benefit from the mild temperatures, as the reduced heat stress allows cows to be more comfortable even without the need for excessive cooling measures like fans and misters.
The cooler weather is due to an unusual atmospheric pattern involving a stronger North Pacific High driving cooler coastal waters and enhancing onshore winds and marine layer clouds, which keep temperatures down especially in the Central Valley and coastal areas. While this pattern contrasts with the heat waves seen elsewhere in the U.S., it offers significant benefits for agricultural productivity and animal welfare in regions like Fresno.
Last July, the Valley endured 27 days with temperatures in triple digits. However, this year, only six days have had temperatures in triple digits. This difference is a relief for many people in the Valley, as expressed by Ryan Jacobsen.
Golfers, too, have been enjoying the cooler weather. On Wednesday, golfers were playing at Madera Municipal Golf Course. Martin Bison hopes to improve his golf score to match the current cooler weather, while Larry Casado enjoys playing golf more when the temperature is in the 80s or 90s.
Christine Gregory, Action News AM Live Meteorologist, explained that a high of 89 degrees was earlier in the month, making the current weather more unusual.
Farmers in the region hope that these lower temperatures persist to continue supporting agriculture through the summer. As the cool weather continues, it is expected that the benefits for crops and livestock will continue to be realised.

Home-and-garden enthusiasts in the region are delighted by the cooler weather, as their gardens can thrive in the milder conditions. The lower temperatures also cater to various plants that prefer cooler environments, potentially leading to a vibrant and diverse display of flora throughout Fresno.
The cooler trend in weather has also positively impacted the lifestyle of those who enjoy outdoor activities, including golfers at locations like Madera Municipal Golf Course. Adept golfers like Martin Bison strive to enhance their scores to match the current, cooler weather, while golfers like Larry Casado appreciate playability when the temperature remains in the 80s or 90s.
