Green Travel Perks: Copenhagen Rewards Sustainable Tourists with CopenPay
Encourages Environmentally-Friendly Tourism: Tourists to Copenhagen Can Earn Rewards for Sustainable Travels
Heading towards a greener future, Copenhagen, Denmark, is setting new norms for sustainable travel. The city's CopenPay program rewards tourists for choosing eco-friendly traveling options, especially those arriving by train.
In today's era of overtourism and climate crisis, Copenhagen is taking a proactive stance to nudge travelers towards more eco-friendly choices. The expanded CopenPay campaign kicks off this summer, offering a lengthier duration, even more activities, and a focus on train travelers.
In a 2024 summer pilot project, visitors could earn cultural experiences, drinks, and rewards by utilizing public transport like bikes or the metro, or picking up litter in parks, beaches, or waterways. Now, the campaign has been doubled to span a nine-week period and the number of associated activities has been tripled to a whopping 90. It runs from June 17 to August 17 this year.
For rail travelers, rewards abound! They can enjoy benefits such as free bike rentals, yoga sessions, guided tours, or discounted entry to popular city attractions. Additionally, the campaign encourages staycations, urging tourists to extend their stays without increasing the number of visitors.
As Søren Tegen Pedersen, CEO of Wonderful Copenhagen, nicely puts it, "By integrating responsible actions into visitor experiences, CopenPay revolutionizes tourism in Copenhagen." The aim is not to bring more tourists but to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable travel. Globally, tourism significantly contributes to CO2 emissions, making it crucial to influence travelers' mindsets and promote greener choices.
