Elenia Institute Turns 100: A Century of High Voltage Innovation

The elenia Institute for High Voltage Technology and Energy Systems is set to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2025. Established in the 1920s by Erwin Marx, the institute has evolved significantly, from its early focus on hi-tech to its current research into renewable energy integration and electric vehicle charging behaviour.

Erwin Marx's invention, the Marx generator, revolutionised testing of insulating materials' voltage resistance. This innovation, along with the construction of a new building in the 1920s, enabled large-scale tests under realistic conditions. Under his leadership, the institute attracted many young students and became a hub for technology.

Postwar, the institute shifted its focus to new application areas like plastic insulation and switchgear technology. Today, it continues to innovate, with research foci including the integration of renewable energies and electric vehicle charging behaviour analysis.

Heinrich Marx, Erwin's son, also made significant contributions. A professor at the institute from 1925 to 1980, he invented the Marx generator and led the institute during its formative years. His research held strategic importance during the Third Reich, leading him to join the NSDAP and SA. Despite this, his scientific legacy remains integral to the institute's history.

From its inception to its centennial, the elenia Institute has been shaped by visionary leaders like the Marx family. As it looks towards the future, the institute continues to push the boundaries of high voltage technology and energy systems, ensuring its place at the forefront of innovation.
