Dürr Revolutionizes Battery Production, Seeks Partners for Gigawatt-Scale Projects
Dürr, a leading machinery and plant engineering company, has made significant strides in lithium-ion battery production. The company has reduced production space and energy consumption by half and increased accuracy and speed in its news processes. Dürr and GROB have joined forces to build a new concept factory targeting the electric vehicle (EV) segment.
Dürr's innovations include the dry coating process, which eliminates the need for drying and solvent recovery, reducing waste and enhancing efficiency. The company has achieved 0.5 micrometer accuracy in calendering and doubled web speed using laser dryers in the classic wet coating news. Additionally, Dürr has developed a new method for electrolyte filling, enabling more precise dosing and faster filling at high pressure.
Dürr and GROB's new concept factory will utilize digital mapping and simulation software for production planning and quality analysis. The factory will employ key technologies such as Dürr's X.Cellify DC family for dry coating of electrodes and Activated Dry Electrode technology from LiCAP Technologies. GROB's new generation Z-folder for cell assembly will also be integrated, offering high system availability and increased throughput with minimal space needs. A proof-of-concept plant for dry coating is already operating in southern France, demonstrating consistent quality and scalability.
Dürr is seeking pilot partners from the automotive and battery manufacturing industries for gigawatt-scale projects in lithium-ion battery cell concept factories. The company aims to implement these projects in collaboration with industry players.
Dürr's advancements in battery production, including the dry coating process and electrolyte filling method, promise significant improvements in efficiency, accuracy, and speed. The new concept factory, a collaboration with GROB, will harness these innovations to support the growing EV segment. Dürr's search for pilot partners signals its commitment to driving large-scale adoption of these cutting-edge technologies.
